Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT AIRPORT DO YOU FLY OUT OF?

All of our flights leave from and return to West Palm Beach International Airport. (PBI)

HOW DO I KNOW IF I QUALIFY FOR A FLIGHT?

We take all veterans who served during the following dates: priority is given to WWII, then Korean, then Vietnam veterans by date of application.

  • WWII: December 7, 1941-December 31, 1946
  • Korean War: June 5, 1950 – January 31, 1955
  • Vietnam War: November 1, 1955 – June 7, 1975

HOW DO I GET ON A FLIGHT?

You can go to this link HonorFlightsefl.org/Veteran Application and fill out an application and attach your DD214 (or equivalent discharge paperwork showing applicable service dates),

Or you can email Veterans@HonorFlightsefl.org and ask for a copy of the application be emailed or postal mailed to you, and then you can fill it out and email it back with your DD214 or mail it back to the address on the application along with your DD214.

I HAVE ALREADY FILLED OUT AN APPLICATION HOW DO I FIND OUT WHEN I’M GOING ON A FLIGHT?

It is nearly impossible to determine the exact flight due to fluctuations in the list as applications come in, and flights take place. But an approximate date can be given if you email Veterans@HonorFlightsefl.org Emailing is much faster than calling, we get hundreds of calls and with an all-volunteer staff it can take a long time to get a call back. If you are a texter, give a phone number that a text can be sent back to and an answer can be given that way as well.

WHERE IS YOUR OFFICE?

We do not have an office, we are based out of Stuart, FL and hold meetings once a month at 800 SE Monterey Rd. Stuart, to find out when the next volunteer meeting is call 855-359-2838.

HOW MANY EMPLOYEES DO YOU HAVE?

We have ZERO employees; Southeast Florida Honor Flight is an all-volunteer organization.

ARE TERMINALLY ILL VETERANS GIVEN ANY SPECIAL PRIORITY?

YES! Any veteran diagnosed with a terminal illness from any conflict, who has never been able to visit their memorial, is given the same priority as WWII. Please call us for more information.

WHAT IF THE VETERAN IS IN A WHEELCHAIR OR ON OXYGEN?

  • WHEELCHAIRS — Southeast Florida Honor Flight provides all of the wheelchairs needed during the trip. If you are wheelchair dependent and require the use of a lift on the bus, please ensure we are aware of this ahead of time, our coaches all have lifts and we want to ensure we have the all of the information we need.
  • OXYGEN — If the veteran requires oxygen, a prescription for the oxygen must be provided by the veteran’s healthcare provider, identifying the delivery method (mask or nasal cannula), frequency (as needed or continuously), and the rate of delivery (usually 2-3 liters per minute). The veteran’s family must secure a FAA-approved oxygen concentrator for use on the plane. Your normal oxygen supplier will have these for rent. We will provide oxygen cylinders to be used at the memorials. Veterans on oxygen are required to have oxygen cylinders available from their home to the departure airport and also on the return from their local airport back to their homes. No oxygen cylinders are permitted to be used on the aircraft. If the veteran requires oxygen during the trip, please call us to discuss arrangements.

HOW ARE YOU FUNDED?

Our funding comes primarily from individual donations from people who recognize the great accomplishments and sacrifices of veterans and want them to see their memorial before it’s too late. We also hold local fundraisers (tennis/golf tournaments, stage productions, mechanical bull competitions etc.) We have no affiliation with the VA, or the government.

WHAT DOES THE GUARDIAN FEE INCLUDE?

Guardian’s fee covers the cost of airfare to and from Washington, DC., transportation to all memorials, flight apparel, meals and refreshments throughout the day.

HOW CAN I BE A GUARDIAN?

You can go to this link HonorFlightsefl.org/Be A Guardian and fill out an application. For guardian questions please email: Guardians@HonorFlightsefl.org

CAN MY SON, DAUGHTER, GRANDSON, ETC. GO AS A GUARDIAN?

Yes, but the family member must have submitted their guardian application. The family member guardian also must be physically capable of handling the duties of an Honor Flight guardian. Our TOP priority is the safe travel of ALL the veterans. Generally speaking, our ratio is one veteran per guardian. Guardians may be responsible for some lifting, pushing wheelchairs, handing out meals and water. To download a guardian application, click on “Applications” then “Guardian. The Guardian fee is $400.

CAN MY SPOUSE BE MY GUARDIAN?

NO, we want this day to be you the veteran, and if your spouse is your guardian you will be more concerned about caring for your spouse than you are about the reason you are on this flight.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? HOW MUCH MONEY DO I NEED TO BRING?

The cost is FREE for World War II, Korean War, Vietnam Era and terminally ill veterans. You do not need to bring any money, unless you intend to purchase souvenirs. For guardians, the cost is $400.

HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHICH VETERANS GET TO GO?

First, priority is given by conflict, World War II, Korean War, then Vietnam War in that order.  Then within conflict. veterans are flown on a “first-apply, first-fly basis.”  Currently there is no wait for WWII and Korean veterans.  For newly applying Vietnam veterans, the wait is about one year.

I AM THE WIDOW OF A WORLD WAR II VETERAN. CAN I GO?

Sadly, the answer is “no”. Again, we simply do not have the resources, funding, or seating available to transport all the veterans who are presently on our waiting list. Adding spouses and widows simply isn’t an option for our program at this time.

HOW MANY FLIGHTS CAN I GO ON AS A VETERAN?

You are permitted one HONOR FLIGHT, regardless of location. With thousands of people on waiting lists and limited resources, we cannot permit more than one flight per person.
